In the recent Slate.com interview, The Fight Against Big Tobacco Can Teach Us How to Fight Big Oil, Sarah Milov, associate professor of history and RRD Lab partner, spoke with Nitish Pahwa about the comparisons between Big Oil and Big Tobacco, the innovations and flaws of nonsmokers’ protest methods, and the unique challenges facing climate activists.

Milov’s 2019 book, The Cigarette: A Political History (Harvard University Press) unpacks the rise and fall of the tobacco industry to illustrate America’s continuing battles over corporate influence, individual responsibility, collective choice, and the scope of governmental power.
